Me and Balaji Shankar

Last Friday we were at a friend's, sipping wine, listening to Carnatic music and discussing his massive collection of songs and concerts. Suddenly, I requested that he play a Balaji Shankar concert. I had not remembered how good it was. I sat there completely spellbound. I beseeched my friend to record all Balaji Shankar recordings in his possession on an MP 3 for me. Over the past week, I have listened to nothing else in my car, driving sometimes with the top open the strains of music escaping to fall on strangers' ears.

Who is this guy? Better yet, where is he now? I don't know the answer to the second question, which adds to his mystique. He is a Carnatic vocalist whose prodigious talent was discovered at an early age, so he could learn under the tutelage of the great D.K. Jayaraman. He took to the stage early, first accompanying his teacher and then later by himself. Pleasant looking and earnest, he had everything going for him musically -magnificent voice at once majestic and tender, with precise adherence to the convention of a raga, purity of tone and accuracy of beat. It is also rare for such an artist to become one with the song, submerged, egoless and spontaneous. And he became all that. This brought a heady quality to his music drawing the audience into a world where everything begins and ends with the music. A fan of radio and news I have been loath to switch over to the radio so immersed as I am in my own private concert in the car. His bilahari is the finest I have heard as also his abhogi and karaharapriya. He takes us on this surfboard that dips and rises always landing perfectly on a note, confident and assured. He sits on the shoulders of his guru and that great musical tradition of a disciplined rendition infused with devotion. These must have been his finest hours since what followed was an abdication of this gift as he disappeared into obscurity. It is rumoured he had a nervous breakdown from the pressures and politics of being a first rate artist. Others say he lost the love of his life and a few others that he gave it all up for a career in IT. He has not been heard from or seen since the early 2000s, when he was in his mid to late twenties. For now we are having to stay content with YouTube postings where other fans like me have bemoaned his departure. Musicians are dime a dozen these days and there is no dearth of talent in a vast country like India. And yet nothing has quite moved and enthralled me like this young man's music. Can someone please locate him and bring him back on stage?,

Thanks for your comments Latha. I am an avid fan of Balaji Shankar's songs (i have built a music folder compiling a list of various songs based on what was available at Giri Trading and on youtube). In case you do have any further songs by this gentleman singer, i would like to obtain the same. His absence from the public domain is a great loss for the genuine carnatic music rasika. Is there any way one could ascertain the real cause of his absence and persuade if possible for him to resume singing?

Hi Latha, I too am terribly disappointed that Shri Balaji is no longer performing. I was fortunate enough to see him live in NY in the late 1990s. He performed in DC as well as other places. I have cassettes of his concerts. I am sure these are rare indeed. I also have all five of his albums/CDs that have been released. What a loss to carnatic music. I can share the recordings.

I am excited to have just found him on facebook. I dropped him a note and he actually wrote back! Before I contacted him today, one of my friends informed me that she had chatted with him on FB a couple of years ago and he had confirmed the voice problem. In his note to me, he mentioned that he has been working on his voice and he does sing at home. He is not ready to give full length concerts as his voice has not reached the level of perfection he obviously expects. I am just happy that he is still singing. He works for HCL in Chennai.

For all those are eager to have Balaji Shankar back to his singing ways; I wanted to give you an update. Like many of you, I am a great fan of Balaji Shankar and once I returned to India, I managed to get connected with him. I met him yesterday (6th Sept 2015) at his house and hence wanted to let you know the latest update. He had stopped singing due to some throat related problems and in the past few years he has started practicing in the hope that he could get back to singing. He lives with his wife and 8 year old kid at Chennai. He is a very humble and an extremely polite human being and like all of you I wish he will get back to singing soon. I did express on behalf of all his fans (all of you) that "we" are all eagerly waiting for him to get back.

That's just great, Kevin. Thanks for the update. It is very nice to know he has been hoping to get back to singing. Lets hope he can recover to the extent of just making studio recordings at the least. It would seem like giving live concerts to audiences can surely be very daunting after going through a throat condition...just some thoughts - TP

Iam a fan of his singing too. Unfortunately being talented alone does not do much in a highly competitive environment in India. One needs Godfathers to nurture talent. He is one of the most humble and talented persons I have met. I think his well wishers should help him get back on stage instead of watching him go to obscurity.

Right now I am listening to his Nata Kurinji - "Parvathi Kumaaram..."
A superb rendering with the precision of his Guru DKJ.
I pray to Kamalshi that he gets over his voice problem and return him to us.

Terrific musician who would have been in the top today had he continued. Even I know some of my friends tried to convince him to come back to the carnatic music field where still he would have been be a force to reckon with due to his sheer talent. I also learnt that he is currently with a big IT firm settled in chennai due to the uncertainty in the ever competing carnatic music world in chennai and its associated politics.

I pray god that he decides to be back in the field and I am sure in the digital world he will find his place and soon will be recognised for what he is worth of. It will be a treat to all the carnatic music lovers. May god bless such a great talent.

Latha M'am, if you have any collections and would like to share, I am quite interested as well.

Thanks Kevin. This is very heartening indeed, and I got to listen to the song just now. Interesting I too am in touch with Balaji and hope to meet him in person in the near future. It will be a real boon to the rasikas to enjoy his performances going forward. Looking forward and praying to the Almighty to bless him with the required strength. Regards, Venkat.

Great to hear about Balaji Shankar update. I have been listening his concerts for over 20 years and he visited Melbourne, Australia in mid 90s for a mridanga arangetram at Dallas Brooks Hall which drew huge audience. The concert was brilliant and I too have a huge recording of his various kutcheris and look forward to seeing him again at the stage. All the best. Balachandran

It is great to be in touch with Balaji Shankar recently to reconnect with him. He appears to be eager to come back to singing, though at slow pace rather than rushing in. Wish him all the very best as many are eager to listen to him singing in his early 90s voice. Good luck to him in advance.

I see a possibility of Balaji Shankar visiting Japan on a series of concerts, of course contingent on his vocal chords supporting. This was updated by Balaji himself and the decision will be finalized later. More than the visit itself, he is beginning to prepare to give concerts in itself is very encouraging.

Also kindly let me know in this forum any specific ragams or songs which you will like him to sing, I can convey to him. I requested him to record a few and publish it on YouTube which he did and it was great. (My earlier posts on this forum has the link)

I check this forum once in a month or so but if see more posts I will also frequent more.

'I am a Balaji Sankar fan and never fail to listen to his Rithigowla masterpiece " Cheraraavathemeera" . I came to know that he stopped singing because of throat problem- in technical terms called " laryngeal nodule" . I feel so bad that a great artist of great promise had to stop his singing but from above post by Kevin Boulder , I feel happy that he is trying to come back to entertain many of his devoted followers.

I heard him on YouTube a few weeks ago and became a huge fan. I have never heard such divine music before. I'm sure he would have been in the running for the Sangeetha Kalanidhi if that unfortunate voice box issue hadn't disrupted his path to stardom. I do hope we can all meet him. There have been discussions on other forums about this but it hasn't happened so far. It would be wonderful if we could make it happen. Gentlemen such as Balaji Shankar are like rare gems and must be treasured.

My post is rather very old; yes I still have few cassettes of Balaji Shankar old concerts but these are around 25 plus years old; also cassettes have gone out of date nowadays

Latha excellent Blog. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

I Live in Canada, and really love Balaji's recordings (unfortunately don't get to hear him live any longer) I have two of the CD's that are also available in YouTube, that apart don't have any of his live concert recording. Would love to receive them, of course it will be in one of my trips to India, which predominantly tends to be Bangalore & CBE. Would be happy to hear from all the fans who are able to share this genius's recordings.

Many thanks
